How to Do a Professional Paint Job In Your Home
Painting the inside of your home is a bit more difficult than most people tend to realize. It is not as simple as slapping some paint on the wall, spreading it around, and calling it a day. If painting were that easy, no one would need to hire professional painters. If the interior of your home is due for a new paint job and you want to give it a professional look yourself without hiring an outside company, here are a few tips to help you accomplish all of your interior painting goals.
Preparing to Paint
One of the most important aspects of any type of home improvement job is preparation. With the proper amount of preparation, you can save yourself a lot of time when painting day arrives. The main objective is to do a professional looking job on a tight budget as quickly as possible. Preparation gets you much closer to that objective. One of the first things you should do to prepare the interior of your home for painting is to take a hammer and go around the room driving all the nails sticking out of the wall deeper into the wall so that they are no longer poking out. You will want to take some type of filler substance and fill in all of the holes around the room from nails as well. Once the filler has dried completely, you will want to take some sandpaper and sand the filler until it is smooth.
Sanding Flaking Paint
Another thing you can do to prepare your interior walls for painting is to sand away all of the flaking paint off of your walls. Even if you do not see any actual paint flakes, the paint might still be peeling. You can test the walls for flaking paint by using a piece of clear sticky tape and applying it to the wall. Pull the tape back off the wall and examine it for paint chips and flakes. If these appear on the tape, you will need to use your sandpaper to sand the areas smooth.
Cleaning Walls and Ceilings
Another critical aspect of painting preparation is to remove cobwebs and dust from all of the walls and ceilings. Removing the dust and dirt from your walls will enable the paint to go on easier and smoother. One of the best ways to remove the dirt is to purchase a cleaning product that is designed to remove dirt for painting projects.
When the big day arrives and you are ready to paint, you will need to take some masking tape and tape off light switches and power outlets so that you do not get paint on them. You will want to begin your paint job by painting the ceilings in each of the interior rooms followed by the walls. Once the walls have been painted, if there is any type of wood surfaces that are part of the room, you can do those last. Always be sure to wear old clothes and don’t forget to put on a mask to keep you from breathing in paint fumes.
