A porch area can be the heart of a home in the spring, summer, and fall, or a year-round, relaxing space if the porch is designed to be a 4-season porch. Whenever you use your porch, you will find it well worth your time and effort to create a welcoming space that you and your guests will enjoy spending a great deal of time in.

Remove Clutter

Many people do not make the most of their porch space and end up using it as a storage area. If your porch is currently cluttered with an array of items that you haven’t used in years, get rid of unwanted items and clear out the space in preparation for creating a great porch area.

Determine What You Will Use the Space For

Will you use your porch for an eating area? A playroom for the kids? A place to entertain guests? A simple area to relax and read a good book? An exercise space? There are endless ideas for porch spaces. Choose an idea that will allow you to get the most use out of the space over the years.

Touch Up the Space

If your porch area could use a new coat of paint, new screens, or is suffering from structural problems, it’s a good idea to take care of these problems before filling up the space with chairs or other items.

Entertainment Space

If you plan to use your porch for entertaining guests, make sure that you include enough porch furniture so that everyone can sit comfortably. Choose a color scheme that suits the area. For instance, if the porch is set in a more natural environment, choose earth tone colors. If the porch overlooks a city, you might opt for more lively colors. Make sure that furniture is covered with a weather-resistant material. Add a table so that guests have a place to set drinks or food.

Relaxing Reading Room

If you have a small porch that you plan on using for relaxing activities such as reading, you might consider installing a hammock, comfortable chair, and small table to rest a cup of tea. Place a bird feeder near the area to add to the ambiance. A small fountain will also add to the relaxing atmosphere. Add elements that relax you the most so that you have a personal space to go to whenever you would like to escape the stresses of the day.

Make Use of the Interior Wall

You can use the interior wall of the porch for adding art work and/or a book shelf. Many people choose to paint the interior wall of porches white and then add furniture and other elements to the room to bring color to the space. If the floor is made up of wooden planks, consider adding a rug to the room. To add color to the space, you can paint the floor using tasteful colors or simple stain the wood to protect it and to create a natural look.
