Adding Worms to Your Compost Pile

Everyone these days is concerned with doing their part to help save the environment. A day does not go by without some new scientific study coming out that demonstrates clearly just what kind of trouble our planet is in for. One of the biggest problems facing the environment is the mounds of trash that keep collecting at local dumps. This garbage is piling up quickly and is polluting and poisoning the ground. Many individuals have decided to tackle this problem by creating compost piles. A compost pile is a pile made from different materials that can be used for fertilizer or some other type of gardening aid. It is made up of mostly garbage and food leftovers. Rather than send this trash to the dump, you can create a compost pile and use it as fertilizer and keep pollution levels down.

Worms are naturally equipped to do this type of work and they do it well. In order to get started composting, you will need to either purchase or make a compost bin. There are a couple of different reasons why you need a compost bin. You want to try and protect your pile from direct sunlight, wind, and rain. Too much rain will cause your compost pile to hold too much moisture, and this moisture will slow down the rate of decomposition.

The easiest way to come by a compost bin is to simply buy one. You can either buy a bin that is specifically designed to be a compost bin or you can simply buy a trash can that has some type of lid with it. All you will need to do is throw your leftovers and other assorted garbage into the bin. First, though, you should drill a couple of holes in the body of the trash can so that you can have proper ventilation as well as having a place for water and moisture to drain out.

Once you have your bin prepared, it is time to start filling it up with the proper materials. Once you have the right materials to create the bedding area of your bin, you can begin to add in the worms. It is also important to make sure that the worms you put in the bin grow healthy and strong. Worms love to munch on old tea bags and pieces of bread. Throw in some clippings from when you mowed your grass. This will help your worms grow and enjoy their new habitat.

It is important to remember that you need to place the bin somewhere that is not in direct sunlight or will receive a lot of water if it rains. While the pile does need to remain somewhat moist, you do not want to leave it out directly in pouring rain. Once your pile begins to properly decompose, you will be able to apply it to your organic garden or grass to give it a healthy look.
