5 Simple Home Decorating Tips for Everyone
Nothing is quite as nice as coming home to a beautifully decorated living space that reflects who you are while providing a haven from the busy world outside. While not everyone can afford the services of a top home decorator, everybody can make the most of their interior space by following these five simple tips.
Tip #1: Determine Your Home Decorating Style
Some people love the look of a casual, eclectic, or bohemian room, while others prefer their spaces to embody formality. Some love clean, modern lines, and others prefer antiques or simple country looks. Before you begin, decide what works best for you, then do your best to select items that complement one another.
Tip #2: Incorporate Functionality
As you select furniture, wall hangings, and accent items for your home, try to choose some items that are functional as well as beautiful. For example, when selecting window coverings, consider whether insulation or privacy is an issue you need to address.
Tip #3: Create Focal Points that Stand Out
Every room in your home should have a focal point. When you enter a room, where do your eyes fall, naturally? It could be that the focal point is a fireplace, a dining room table, a piano, an armoire, or even the view from a picture window. Whatever your focal point, ensure you dress it up a bit and ensure everything else in the room complements it rather than detracts from it. For instance, dressing a fireplace mantle with seasonal greenery, beautiful pottery, or a sculpture works well, and simply placing a well-balanced bouquet on a table works wonders.
Tip #4: Incorporate Color
When decorating, color is important – even if you love mostly white or mostly black, or prefer neutral tones, you’ll need to incorporate at least a little color. Choose cool tones, like blues, greens, or lavenders, to evoke nature and make your rooms seem a bit more spacious. Select warm colors, such as yellows, oranges, and reds to add warmth and energy to a space. Add complementary colors to create more interest, and remember that using different shades of a single color works well, too, so long as complementary colors are added to keep things from looking boring or monochromatic.
Look to nature to provide inspiration for color combinations; your favorite flowers, the bold colors of a peacock, or the colors of a forest can help you decide where to begin.
Tip #5: Do What Pleases You
Don’t choose a look based on what’s currently popular, or what you think others will like. Your home is your castle, and the way it looks should appeal to you on a very deep level. Your culture, your background, and your personal sense of style can be showcased beautifully in every room of your home, making it a true expression of whom you really are. Select the things that please you most, and do what works for you and your family. With just a little planning and some artistic vision, you can create a stunning look that truly makes you feel at home.
